E-Coat (KTL) Dipping for Classic Car Restorations: The Hidden Limits

2 min read

Restoration projects take time, so many owners think about sending the body for KTL, the cathodic dip coating known as e-coat, to finish faster. KTL is the leading factory technology for corrosion protection. On a restoration project, though, it has serious limits.

The Faraday cage effect

E-coat is deposited electrically. Because of the Faraday cage effect, the electric field is weak inside deep, closed sections and tight seams. There the coating cannot build the required film thickness, and those areas stay under protected. On a classic body, closed sections and seams are everywhere.

Trapped chemicals

Before dipping, the body goes through cleaning and pretreatment baths. If the correct drain and escape holes are not open, acidic liquids from the cleaning stage get trapped inside the body, which is the last thing you want in a restored car.

The biggest problem: the work after

Say the body comes back coated. As soon as you start welding and straightening, you burn the protection off in every area you touch. The fresh metal is exposed again, and you would have to send the body back to protect it properly.

When it makes sense

E-coat works best when all metalwork is finished first and the shell has been prepared with drainage in mind. Treat it as one step in a plan, not as a shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

Is e-coat good for a classic car restoration?

It gives excellent protection where it can reach, but closed sections may stay under coated and any later welding burns it off. It works best after all metalwork is finished.

What is the Faraday cage effect in e-coating?

Inside enclosed sections the electric field that deposits the coating is weak, so the film there stays thinner than on open surfaces.
