Private Label vs Original Tools: Why Who Designed It Matters

2 min read

In the tool market you find identical tools in different colours under different brands, with the same housing. It is easy to conclude they all come from the same factory. What really matters is where the design started.

Two very different stories

  • A brand with a long tradition in tools designed it, and others copied it afterwards. In that case the copy will fall short of the original somewhere.

  • A factory in China designed it and offered it for private label. Brands simply put their own logo on it.

The difference is in R&D

Both can be made in China, like almost everything today. The big difference is research and development. When the engineering comes from a company with a real tradition in building tools, you are paying for something you cannot see on the outside: tolerances, materials, durability and ergonomics that were tested before the tool reached you.

That is why the same looking tool can behave very differently on the bench after a few months of daily work.

What we are doing about it

Vasilis is digging into which tools on the market are truly original and which are private label, and will show the differences in upcoming videos.

Frequently asked questions

What is a private label tool?

A tool designed and made by one factory and sold under other companies' brand names.

Are copied tools worse than the originals?

Often they fall short somewhere, because the original research and testing did not come with the copy.

Tools and equipment are part of our training at the DeBeer Academy & Experience Center in Paiania.
