Does Your Air Dry Clear Coat Turn Yellow? A Simple Test Panel Method

2 min read

Air dry clear coats are convenient, but many have two weak points: they can yellow over time and their adhesion is not always great. When you paint half a bumper and blend, the edge of the blend is where you will see it, sometimes as peeling.

The white panel test

You can check any clear yourself before it goes on a customer's car:

  1. Take a test panel and paint it white.

  2. Clear one half with the air dry clear and the other half with the clear you use every day.

  3. Leave the panel indoors for a while, then outside in the sun.

  4. Compare the two halves. Has the shade changed? Has one side yellowed or darkened?

This gives you a representative sample, and you will know whether the air dry clear you use is reliable.

Why white shows everything

On dark colours nobody will notice slight yellowing. On white it jumps out, even to someone who knows nothing about paint. This is the weak point of several well known brands: they yellow slightly, and on a white car that is enough to bring the customer back.

The samples Vasilis has tested so far are still crystal clear after a long time, which shows that it can be done. Test before you trust.

Frequently asked questions

Why does clear coat turn yellow?

Some formulations, often fast air dry clears, are less resistant to UV and ageing. Yellowing shows first on white and light colours.

How can I test a clear coat for yellowing?

Paint a panel white, clear half with the product you want to test and half with your usual clear, then expose it indoors and outdoors and compare.
